Entering the New Year with a Clean Conscious
I used to do my laundry at the Wash-Rite Laundromat on the corner. A few years back, I went at my usual time, 9 a.m. on Wednesday, which happened to be New Year’s Eve, but instead of being empty like it usually was, it was packed, crazy, like I’d never seen it before.
I mentioned it to a mommy-friend in the playground that afternoon and she said, “Oh yeah, it’s a Hispanic thing: You don’t go into the new year with dirty laundry.” Well, I’ve never done my laundry at the Laundromat on New Year’s Eve again, but I have often thought about not going into the new year with dirty laundry. It makes such intuitive sense. It just feels right.
It isn’t the literal dirty laundry that I don’t want to take into the new year, though that would be nice too, it’s the to-do items never crossed off, the unfinished business that hangs over you and ruins your sleep, the stuff that is stuck in your in-box. So use these last few minutes of 2014 to knock out a few icky things that have been cluttering up your to-do list for ages. The doctors’ appointments never booked, the annoying forms never filled out, the phone call you’ve been postponing. Whatever it is: Just do it.
Then you can enter 2015 with a spring in your step.
And isn’t that the best way to make an entrance?
