Time for Summer Vacation

Summer used to feel so long. Now it rushes by and I’m torn between wanting it to be longer and wondering when on earth school starts.

In Out of Chaos #21 I wrote about what makes a vacation rental so appealing. It isn’t just that we are on vacation, it’s that we have stripped life down to the essentials; we have just what we need and no clutter.

So how can we get the most out of summer? How can we distill the best part of it, so we can enjoy it more? What are my goals for the summer? As with most things, I like to start with a list—even for fun things: Take my twins on a bike ride down to the Battery, look at a few colleges with my son, and of course spend some days at the beach. Then I have projects that I tackle every summer, like my photo album, and I’m also renovating a few closets. I also have goals for my kids: I want to teach them to cook dinner, and not just mac & cheese from a box (if they can bake cupcakes, they can bake a chicken, right?). I also want to teach them to do their own laundry. It seems easier to fit these endeavors in over the summer, when there is more time and less pressure.

As with any to-do list, I look at the items and plug them into the calendar before summer slips away. I can always switch them around, and while I want to have some lazy aimless days, those days will be all the sweeter if I sandwich them in between some fun adventures and projects.

So make a list of your summer goals, and then schedule them before all your summer plans swept away in a haze of late nights and bug spray.
