Reset

I’m a sucker for a reset: I love Mondays, the first day of school, even moving. Today, I enjoyed the first day back from vacation. The laundry was a drag but we did it all, we opened the mail, and went to the grocery store. I feel like our week in the sun left us energized, ready to eat healthfully, excited for spring and ready to hit the ground running.

Whenever I have this kind of momentum, I try to ride it. It’s like bodysurfing—when you catch the wave just right and you can ride it all the way into shore. I don’t know how long this feeling will last, but tonight my husband and I will finish our taxes and right now the kids are getting knapsacks ready for school in the morning. If nothing else, we’ll start the week with a clean slate.

Another thing I noticed about vacation is that even though I ate a lot of things I don’t generally eat at home (bread, dessert), I’m away from my normal “bad” habits. As bad habits go, my popcorn and coffee addictions are pretty tame, but it was great to disrupt them. Now that I’m home and away from chocolate fountains and all-you-can-eat profiteroles, I’m hoping I’ll be able to cut down my popcorn and coffee intake too. Or at least the popcorn.

Vacation is great for trying new things (paddle boarding! sailing catamarans! outdoor yoga!) that can shake up your perspective, but the best part of vacation is bringing that new perspective home, so you don’t just slip back into your old ruts. Sure, you have to go back to work and school, but ideally you brought home more than just a golden glow. Hopefully that adventurous spirit fit in your carryon so that every day you can wake up and ask yourself: What new thing shall I try today?

If you can bring that kind of spirit to your everyday life, you’ll not only chew through your to-do list, you might just be ready to get to work on those bolder “Maybe Someday” ideas too.
