The Joys of the Season

Usually, I focus on how to streamline Thanksgiving. My goal has always been about helping you simplify things, taking the focus off perfection and putting it on enjoying good food with loved ones. This year, I want to help you do the same thing with Christmas.

Some of the most basic advice I offer for de-stressing Thanksgiving can easily be applied to Christmas: Ask yourself which traditions are really meaningful for your family, and which ones create more stress than joy. I know the kids love the cinnamon rolls I make for Christmas morning, and I love decorating the tree, but I don’t think anyone feels the need for three courses or white linen at Christmas dinner.

If you have little kids, you’re not going to be able to eliminate all the presents under the tree, but you may still be able to create that magic without going overboard. Many families these days have done away with many of the trimmings in favor of a great trip—even if it’s later in the year. Maybe only do presents for the little kids, and see if grownups want to donate to charities in lieu of gifts.

Some people find getting cards out is super stressful. I know for me, it’s been harder and harder to get the kids together to take a decent photo the past few years. I also feel guilty about all the paper waste. So this year, I’m taking cards off my list, even though they are beautiful and I love getting them. Maybe I’ll do them again in a few years, when the kids have learned to make the cinnamon rolls.

Perhaps, by simplifying my tasks I’ll make some room for my kids to step up and create their own traditions, because my son’s cheesecake rocks, and I’m totally willing to pass the crème brulee torch!
