More Efficient with Age

It’s a good thing I’ve spent much of my life working on being more efficient and keeping things simple, because I’ve been paying attention, and I’ve seen that getting older is going to make it more complicated.

It already takes me a lot longer to brush my teeth than it used to, what with the flossing and the gum maintenance and the restoring mouthwash. There seems to be a whole host of “maintenance” things I’m expected to do for my rotator cuff and my plantar fasciitis, and that isn’t even counting the cosmetic things. On the other hand, I don’t want to be shortsighted. The five minutes I spend each morning on my shoulder is peanuts compared to the time I’d spend if I had to have surgery. I want to be a good girl and do it all, but it takes time—a lot of time.

One of my August customs is to book all my yearly check-ups for right after school starts in the fall. I like that it is a habit, so I don’t even have to think about when I’m going to schedule it, I just know. I see that even if you are healthy, the sheer number of doctors you are expected to see (periodontists, gastroenterologists, urologists) as you get older seems to increase exponentially. So I’m not falling for this whole I’ll have time when I get older nonsense. I’m going to keep investing time in maintenance, and I’m going to continue to try to up my efficiency, because I can see, things never really get easier, just different.
