Summertime and the Living Is…

My client did a great job today, tossing piles of unread magazines she’s been hoarding all winter, and letting go of a small pile of clothing when we switched her wardrobe from winter to spring.

I always think it’s easier to organize in warm weather. Of course, there’s the idea of “spring cleaning” and throwing open the windows and letting in light and fresh air. But also, winter is a time when a little clutter can feel a little cozy: a pile of books by the bedside table, a few throws tossed on the couch so everyone can cover their toes when they all pile on to watch Netflix.

In the summer we’re spending time outside, we travel, and clutter feels heavy and disorderly—and hot. Take advantage of that feeling to lighten up, eliminate the extra and extraneous. Every change of season is an easy opportunity to let go of clothes. What items did you never wear this winter? That brown jacket that you always think you’ll wear, but never do? That unflattering fleece? Now that you have the really nice thin ski socks, will you ever need those old, thick wool ones? Now’s the time to say goodbye.

As you pull out your summer things, assess each item. If something looks a bit shoddy, let it go now. Summer is a great time to embrace a pared down wardrobe while still looking chic.

We’ve finally gotten some beautiful weather. Embrace it by shucking off the winter’s accumulation. Let in the light and let go of the clutter.
