Unraveled

It was a long, long summer. Somehow, the way it broke, I ended up with more free time than I’ve had since the summer of 1998. It was great and relaxing (sort of) and I tried to go with the flow and enjoy. But the truth is, at this point, I’m feeling a bit unraveled.

My friend was shocked that her son, after a perfect summer of camp and vacation, was eager to get back to school, but I know how he feels. I crave that structure. I am better than average at creating my own structure, but after a while, especially when there are other people involved, it gets a bit exhausting.

So how do we reel ourselves back into structure without losing all the benefits of our relaxing summer? It’s good to get out in front of it. Don’t let things come tumbling down on you: Go out and meet them head on.

Start with a list. What are the things that always overwhelm you when you first get back? It might be school forms or registering for after-school activities for your kids. Or holiday entertaining. Or end-of-quarter reports. It might be scheduling your December ski-trip. Don’t delay: create a strategy now, before the phone starts ringing and the e-mail starts pinging and your calendar gets filled up.

To me, September is always a new beginning, a chance to instill new routines, especially in the morning. This year, with my younger ones getting ready to walk to school on their own, my goal is to have a more structured exercise routine than I’ve had in the past, oh, say 15 years.  What are your goals for the fall? Put them on the list, and you’ll have a better shot at accomplishing them.

We all hate to see summer go, but now is your chance to start fresh and refreshed. Join me on Facebook and let me know just what you are gearing up for in your fall lineup.
