Getting Some Energy

Yesterday, I was a whirlwind. I was hanging pictures, putting up hooks for belts, clearing papers off my desk and baking up a storm. The reason for all this activity? I’d offered to host a small gathering for my building in my apartment. Were any of these people going to look in my husband’s closet? Probably not (although I have had guests check out my linen closet—in my line of work, it’s always a possibility). It was more that there were a few things around the house that I’d been meaning to do but that hadn’t been high priorities, however the prospect of visitors made me perk up and get things done.

I see this all the time: The in-laws are coming and you realize it is high time you dealt with the two years of schoolwork piled on top of your son’s bookcase. Or your friend who always hosts bridge is deep into a renovation, so you offer to host this week’s game and suddenly your home comes into focus: Now you see the clutter and the areas you’ve neglected. Good! I say ride the wave. It may not be logical to get involved in a big under-the-sink weed just because company is coming, but when you’re in the mood, you have to go with it.

In fact, in my book I suggest getting the ball rolling by inviting someone over for dinner in the near future, just to give yourself that jolt and help you see your home through fresh eyes. So be bold, throw a dinner party, and who knows what lingering household projects you’ll finally complete.
