September Morning

I’ve always loved September—back to school, back to work—it feels like a new opportunity and a chance to reset. To me, September is the most hopeful month. It seems easier to establish new habits at this time of year, rather than in January when I’m recovering from holiday decadence.

For the first day of school, I sent my kids off with bags of school supplies and words of wisdom, and I’m hitting the ground running with two clients, a great way to jumpstart after the slower summer months.

Even if you don’t have kids, this post-Labor Day week feels like back-to-reality for many people. Your weekend rental is over, your boss is back from vacation, you’re tan and rested: How can you channel that new-opportunity feeling and use it to propel you toward better habits? Take a moment to think about what your goals are for this year. Is there a creative project you’ve been thinking about but have yet to start? Do you want to keep up the level of physical activity you reached over the summer? Need to spend some time restoring your home after a summer of comings and goings?

Spend a minute writing down your objectives and then think about when you’re going to make time for them. Whatever routines, good and bad, you had going on before the summer, may have been disrupted so take a moment to put that Saturday-morning Pilates class that you were so good about getting to last spring back into your calendar, and if your goal is to write every morning, put that in your calendar too.

I know it can feel like a drag to be back to routine, but if you think of it as an opportunity, it can be the last wave of summer that you can ride all the way into shore.
